Desert Tennis Weekend

Watching polo matches at the Empire Polo Club.

Polo ready.

It’s become a tradition. Weekend in the Desert. Mid-March. Poolside at La Quinta Resort. BNP Paribas Open Tennis Tournament. Polo. Rosé. What’s not to like?

The La Quinta Resort in Indian Wells has been our landing pad for the BNP Paribas Open each March for the last several years. It has quickly developed into a ritual. It started with just the two of us for the weekend, but word got out and since then it’s been the more the merrier.

The moment we pull up and breathe in the incredible aroma of blooming orange blossoms, we know we are home. Eli, standout bell-captain and one of our all-time favorites, is always there to greet us. We grab a glass of fruit-infused water and check in, and Eli golf carts us to our room. The Spa Villas, which were roomy when it was just the two of us, have recently been known to pack as many as six, somehow still working, and adding to the fun.

We make a quick change and have been known to be poolside within 15 minutes. Over the years we’ve seen Caroline Wozniacki hanging by the pool, Andy Murray grabbing breakfast at Twenty6, Andy Roddick at Adobe Grill and Novak Djokovic warming up on the exhibition court, all without leaving the hotel. The trip also usually includes a Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rosdale sighting around the grounds as they come to cheer Roger on.

The pool, tennis courts and restaurants make it hard to leave the resort. We do however make an exception when it comes to polo and the tennis tournament.

TIP: If you don’t have tennis tournament tickets, all is not lost. On our first trip, we arrived sans tickets. The tickets the hotel had to offer were a little too rich for our blood, but we gave them our info anyway. About an hour into the day’s tournament we got a call that the tickets were still available at a much more user-friendly price. We snapped them up and in a flash we were enjoying wine and cheese in an air-conditioned box with most of the day’s matches yet to be played. There are always deals to be had, so think creatively.

UPDATE: Although one of our favorites, front-desk manager Evan, is no longer at La Quinta, we are hoping the experience remains perfect. This year’s tournament dates are March 9-22, 2015.
